The love for sports (soccer, sprinting, cross country, long jump, volleyball, basketball) has always fascinated me, experiencing it firsthand in various disciplines. I’ve learned that when you step onto the field or track, as Pope Francis would say, “you find beauty, generosity, and camaraderie. If these are missing from a game, it loses its strength, even if the team wins. There’s no room for individualism, but everything is coordinated for the team.” If one is an athlete, even if they become a professional, they should never forget to approach sports as an ‘amateur,’ “which benefits society, building the common good from the values of generosity, camaraderie, and beauty.” I’m truly happy about this initiative that has been ongoing in our city for several years now.

Always be sportsmen and not just fans. We know all too well that often fandom can degenerate and is exactly the opposite of what sports aim to teach.

I embrace and bless these initiatives.

“With great pleasure, I join the other institutions in extending a warm welcome to the athletes, organizers, and accompanying personnel of the international event “Minibasket in piazza,” now in its twenty-fourth edition. The success achieved in previous editions, which will surely be replicated, lies in the formula that brings together young participants from many countries across all five continents, united by their love for sports and their desire to engage in mutual cultural exchange. The sports training, founded primarily on respect for the rules of the game and for one’s opponents, as well as on teamwork where the efforts of individuals to achieve a common goal do not simply add up but multiply, represents an invaluable educational opportunity for young people entering contemporary society, as well as for us adults often ensnared in our individualism. The backdrop provided this year by the international stage, following Matera’s designation as European Capital of Culture for 2019, has the potential to amplify the effects to the point of becoming a paradigm of the opportunities afforded by the mutual exchange of experiences and cultures. Alongside appreciation for those who undertake the complex organization, I extend my best wishes to all participants for experiencing the tournament days intensely, marked by sportsmanship and friendship.”

“It is with great enthusiasm and happiness that I welcome the news that once again this year, the City of Matera will host the International “Minibasket in Piazza” Tournament. To each of them, I extend my heartfelt and sincere gratitude.

Their example nurtures and supports the hopes of many adults who, like me, believe in a renewal of humanity, in the interest of the common good and peaceful social coexistence, without distinctions or barriers. We welcome these young people with open hearts and bless them for all they give us every day with their vitality and joyfulness. We pray to God to assist them in their life journey so that it may be rich in holiness, love, and happiness. May we be granted the joy of seeing them grow into true men.”

“This year, the 24th edition of the International Minibasket Tournament “Minibasket in Piazza” has reached an important milestone, representing a moment of great satisfaction for the community and the entire Matera region. It is with immense satisfaction that I warmly greet this wonderful event, a flagship of the city of Matera, both in terms of sports and in its social, cultural, and community aspects. This initiative holds great value, promoting healthy sports competition where young participants not only have the opportunity to compete and learn to challenge each other while respecting the rules but also to socialize, make new acquaintances, and forge new friendships. From the bottom of my heart, I thank all those who, in various capacities, have contributed with dedication and passion to the realization of this edition of the Tournament. I extend a heartfelt ‘good luck’ to all the young athletes and a warm greeting to the numerous enthusiasts who will attend the competitions, with the hope that this sporting event will also be an opportunity to come together and better appreciate the natural, artistic, and cultural beauties of our region. My greetings, extended on behalf of the entire Provincial Council which I preside over, reach out to all the players on the field, their passionate and unmatched coaches, and the attending parents, encouraging them to embrace the true spirit of sportsmanship in their children’s sporting achievements. Furthermore, I extend my greetings and heartfelt thanks to all those who have worked for the success of this always beautiful event.”

“The universal value of sport, understood as participation and social development, has long been ingrained in our city. The Minibasket in Piazza event fits into this context and reflects an extraordinary message of coexistence and fair play that our youth can learn through the game. In this manifestation, the competitive aspect gives way to participation and coexistence among peoples, which honors our city. Sport, in this sense, is experienced as a tool for growth not only for the young generations participating with delegations from around the world but also for the families of Matera who, as is customary, host the young athletes, fully integrating them into our community. I believe this is precisely the added value of an initiative that has long represented the healthy part of our city: sport becoming a mechanism for active participation that transcends belonging and geopolitical boundaries. The children teach us that even on a basketball court set up in a square, fundamental values for our era, already marked by loss and wars, can be conveyed. To all the children, thanks to the initiative of Pielle, goes the true trophy that basketball puts at stake every year.”

“I extend a warm greeting to all participants engaged in the traditional event of “Minibasket in Piazza.” This is now a well-established event for the city of Matera, which this Provincial School Office watches with particular interest. It is an unmissable opportunity for students from schools in the province of Matera to meet peers from different backgrounds and engage with them in an atmosphere of fairness and serenity. The school pays increasingly close attention to the world of sports, which is integrated with equal dignity into the work carried out in traditional subjects. The Ministry of Education has repeatedly emphasized how sports are not only a means of physical development but also contribute to the student’s personality. This event takes on the character of a true celebration of sports, highlighting the qualities of friendship and brotherhood that should characterize every sporting activity. I wish all the children a wonderful week of celebration, marked by sports, which has always united entire communities.”

“Twenty-five years, what an achievement!

Having lived in the city in all its forms and hopes for seven years now, every time Minibasket in Piazza approaches, I realize that winter has truly passed and spring is finally giving way to summer. Schools are out, and urban spaces become everyone’s, they are occupied rather than just passed through; time is taken, and space, above all. In these seven years, and even more so in the last twenty-five, the city has completely transformed: at the beginning, Minibasket in Piazza was perhaps not the only, but certainly the most important moment to meet people from other nations, if not even from other continents.

Today, as Matera is a key stop on a grand Italian tour where the South finally has a new role, Minibasket must be able to intercept this change. It has been an example of relationships between people, one of the cornerstones of our candidacy dossier; now we must all work towards another twenty-five years of noisy kids in shorts invading the Sassi and sleeping in the homes of generous Materans. See you in 2042, 550 years after the discovery of America, 50 years after the discovery of Matera.”

“I extend the sincerest greetings, on my personal behalf and on behalf of the Italian National Olympic Committee, to the organizers and all the young participants in the 24th edition of “Minibasket in Piazza,” which will take place in Matera from June 19th to 25th. This event has the ability to honor tradition while renewing its noble content through passionate commitment aimed at the growth of young people, first as individuals and then as athletes. This manifestation embodies the spirit of those who aim to convey the fundamental concepts upon which our movement is based, through engaging and educational discipline. Those who take to the court know they must adhere to a conduct marked by respect for the rules and the opponent, making fair play and healthy rivalry an irreplaceable script. The event serves an educational function, providing the best platform for comparing different cultures and traditions, seeking to foster shared experiences aimed at collective growth. It is the message of sport expressed virtuously, an opportunity to promote a model that serves as a reference for the community, showcasing young talent and contributing to instilling a new culture for the country’s development. I encourage all the young athletes participating in this tournament to play while enjoying themselves, projecting the image of a world that knows how to unite beyond distance and differences. Making a basket means above all becoming better people. I am confident that the spectacle in the square will meet expectations, presenting the best image of our country internationally, a fundamental business card especially in light of Rome’s candidacy for 2024. The beauties of Matera will make the difference, adding that extra value that always makes a difference.

“Over the years, we have increasingly appreciated the work of Pielle Matera, which, for 24 years now, has been organizing and managing Minibasket in Piazza every summer. It’s a celebration of sports and people, a true event for the large number of mini-basketball players who technically, emotionally, and logistically involve the entire city of Matera. They play, indeed, on the streets, among the people and the shopkeepers, who compete to pamper the young protagonists of this internationally acclaimed tournament. The tournament offers games where no one wants to lose, indeed. Maximum effort is put forth, always respecting the rules. However, it’s also true that the matches, the atmosphere, and the theme of the event serve as a bridge towards solidarity and the integration of peoples: a wonderful lesson for the players, coaches, parents, and managers. They play together, and it’s no coincidence that teams are formed to allow dialogue and understanding among youngsters from geographically distant places: seven kids from New York, sent by the Italian-American community, will form a team with another seven from Grassano, the hometown of Anna, the maternal grandmother of Bill De Blasio, the current mayor of the American city. Maybe they’ll win, maybe not. But thanks to basketball, they’ll certainly talk, get to know each other, and understand what it means to be both the same and different at 13 years old. An important life experience that, like all the mini-basketball players who have already participated in Minibasket in Piazza, will accompany them for a long time in their everyday lives.

Once again, sports, particularly basketball, reaffirms its formative value. I am pleased and proud, and I can only thank, from the bottom of my heart and without any rhetoric, President Sergio Galante and his staff for the precious work they have done over time.”

If, moreover, in that square, a melting pot of races, languages, and colors gathers, then one cannot hope for a better event to convey the values at the core of our sport. For 24 years, Matera has been the world capital of minibasketball, hosting a tournament that draws teams from all five continents to the City of Stones. Whether as a player or a spectator, Minibasket in Piazza is an unparalleled experience, where dozens of different languages find perfect harmony set to the rhythm of bouncing basketballs. “Dear all,

Here we are again at the starting line for a new, wonderful adventure to experience in a rainbow of colors painted by the children who will fill the squares of Matera playing basketball. The 24th edition of this exceptional event, I like to imagine, symbolizes the integration among peoples that we would like to see fully realized. Sport is an example of friendship, brotherhood, and the spontaneous ability to overcome every barrier. Children are the most beautiful image to symbolize a world without borders, without barriers. With these words, I believe I interpret the spirit that has always animated the organizers of the event, to whom I extend my admiration and gratitude on behalf of the sports community in Lucania. A showcase that will put the city of Matera and the entire Basilicata region in the spotlight. It’s a demonstration of the industriousness, ability, and pride that the people of Lucania can and must showcase to the world, alongside its beauties. I would say it’s also the right prelude and another piece to add to the mosaic to be composed and presented for Matera 2019. Pielle, recently honored with an award from CONI, is an indispensable reality of the Matera community. Men of sport who believe in the values of sport. The success of this event should bring you both satisfaction for the many sacrifices you face daily, and also strength for a great new beginning.

“I am very happy to welcome once again in our city the sports event “Minibasket in Piazza”. This year marks the 24th edition! 64 teams are involved, with 1200 children, 300 of whom will compete in basketball games in our revitalized Garibaldi Square. These are large numbers and require great effort from the young athletes, as well as their coaches, managers, and organizers. To all of you, my heartfelt welcome! Our city is delighted to be swept up in the enthusiasm that these children show when they practice this discipline and sports in general. It is certainly a tool for sharing, sacrifice, commitment, and collaboration. The playing field becomes a place of healthy competition, socialization, dialogue, and friendship. A gymnasium of loyalty and respect. Sport certainly makes each of us better when it is based on these values and, in that case, it is able to offer us great emotions. “Once again, the S. Cuore square of our city will be filled with the joy, enthusiasm, and energy of many young athletes. We will have the privilege of hosting a group in the international Minibasket tournament, where our ‘Aquilotti’ will compete with their peers from other Italian regions, Europe, and the African continent.

It’s a concrete, not just theoretical, leap into the realms of hospitality, integration, and cooperation among peoples, something that the children can teach us adults. The natural practice of brotherhood, innate in the hearts of the young and magnified by sports, fully embodies the equality envisaged by Article 3 of our Constitution, which categorically excludes any distinction based on sex, race, language, religion, or opinion among citizens.

In addition to being an extraordinary vehicle for integration, sports educate in relationships with others; they strengthen teamwork and a sense of belonging; they promote respect for others; they uphold merit; loyalty, and a healthy spirit of competition. All are fundamental values in a society increasingly driven, by the widespread use of social networks, towards isolation and individualism. Individualism, which breeds mistrust and fear of the other as something alien.

And so, ‘sport seeks fear to overcome it, effort to triumph over it, difficulty to defeat it,’ as Pierre de Coubertin stated. A warm welcome, therefore, to these great young athletes.

Thinking about “Minibasket in Piazza” brings to mind images of kids, the Bruna’s lights, sports, and celebration. “Minibasket in Piazza” is the celebration of a city that gets involved and carried away by the enthusiasm of the youngest ones. It’s a city that, for a week, warmly welcomes young athletes who come to Matera from all over Italy and Europe (and even from around the world).

“Minibasket in Piazza” is the celebration of colors and emotions! For over twenty years, it has been an opportunity to celebrate through sports. But it’s also a precious chance to reaffirm essential and civil principles that only sports can instill in the youngest ones. “Minibasket in Piazza” is the celebration of sports and friendship, regardless of the country of origin, religion, or language. For over four decades, “Minibasket in Piazza” has been professing the language of peace and brotherhood. It’s universal and understandable to everyone.

“Minibasket in Piazza” only lasts a week. But it’s planned, cared for, and organized for an entire year. Exactly from when the last lights of the Bruna’s decorations that playfully illuminate the city center, the main square of the city, go out. But the colors and emotions don’t fade away. They remain indelible in all those who have participated, offering them the precious opportunity to discover the world through the eyes, enthusiasm, and joy of children. And even when it’s over, “Minibasket in Piazza” stays in the minds and hearts of many, continuing to shine. Waiting for another new event, to be fully experienced exactly a year from now.
