Smiles, a multitude of colors, and flags filled the streets of the City of Matera, thanks to the 750 young athletes and instructors who participated in the parade of the XXXI edition of Minibasket in Piazza, international tournament.

Starting from Piazza del Carro, after visiting the “Fabbrica del Carro” and the majestic work of master Eustacchio Santochirico, all the teams, escorted by law enforcement and the “Euroband” brass band, paraded through the main streets of the city center, passing through Piazza Vittorio Veneto (where the central court for the finals will be set up on Saturday) until they reached Giovanni Paolo II Park, where all the authorities awaited the young athletes to officially kick off the event.

Presented by Sergio Palomba, the stage welcomed Matera’s Police Chief, Emma Ivagnes, who emphasized the importance of collaboration, Matera’s Deputy Mayor Antonio Materdomini, Luca Braia Regional Councilor, Francesco Massaro Councilor of the Municipality of Santeramo, Beniamino Marcone Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Corato, Simone Coppola Sports Councilor of the Municipality of Bitritto, Giovanni Lamorte President of FIP Basilicata, Lorenzo Calia CSI Provincial Committee MT.

The joyful and festive atmosphere ensured that all the children had fun, with the hope that they would carry the Matera tournament with them forever.

As every year, the most important moment of the opening ceremony was the reading in the 7 languages of the participating countries (English, French, Serbian, Lithuanian, Czech, Arabic, and Italian), concluding with the motto “We are children, let us have fun!!!”. A message that goes beyond mere sportsmanship, because “Minibasket in Piazza” is about fun, games, respect, sharing, friendship, and fair play.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic handing over of the key to the City of Matera to the young athletes from around the world who had come to Matera from 4 continents, a moment where all the authorities allowed the children to be the protagonists for a week.
